Add Page Numbers to PDF: Customizable Position, Font, and Format
Add clean, professional page numbers to any PDF document in seconds. Page Numbers in PDF Translator Pro gives you full control over position, format, font size, color, and which pages to number — with a live preview before you commit.
Whether you need to number a report, a legal document, a presentation, or a scanned file, Page Numbers handles the formatting with precise controls and shows you the result on the actual document before processing.
How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
The process takes under a minute:
- Open PDF Translator Pro and navigate to Page Numbers from the main menu.
- Drag and drop your PDF onto the upload zone, or click to select a file from your device.
- In the Position tab, choose where the numbers appear — top, middle, or bottom, combined with left, center, or right. Fine-tune placement with the Space X and Space Y offset fields (in mm), and optionally set an Angle (in degrees) to rotate the number.
- In the Font tab, set the Font Size, Color, and Opacity of the numbers.
- In the Numbering tab, configure the format and range:
- Choose a Pattern: plain number (e.g. 1), page and total (e.g. 1 / 10), or a custom template using {p} for current page and {n} for total pages.
- Set First Page and Last Page to number only a range within the document.
- Set First Number to start counting from a value other than 1.
- Optionally click the output filename to rename the PDF before processing.
- Check the Cost and Balance shown in the panel.
- Click Add Page Numbers. The processed file downloads when ready.
Position
The Position tab controls where on each page the number is placed:
- Position — nine grid positions: top-left, top-center, top-right, middle-left, middle-center, middle-right, bottom-left, bottom-center (default), and bottom-right.
- Space X / Space Y — fine-tune the offset in millimeters from the chosen grid position. Useful for avoiding headers, footers, or existing content.
- Angle — rotate the page number in degrees. Use 0 for standard horizontal text.
Font
The Font tab controls the appearance of the numbers:
- Font Size — choose a size between 6 and 72 points. Default is 12.
- Color — pick any color using the color picker. Default is black (#000000).
- Opacity — set transparency from 0 (invisible) to 1 (fully opaque) in 0.1 steps. Default is 1.
Numbering
The Numbering tab controls the format and range of page numbers:
- Pattern — three options:
- Page number (1) — just the page number.
- Page and total (1 / 10) — current page and total page count.
- Custom — define your own template using {p} for current page and {n} for total pages. Example: Page {p} of {n}.
- First Page — the first page in the document to receive a number. Default is 1. Set to 2 to skip numbering the cover page.
- Last Page — the last page to receive a number. Defaults to the last page of the document.
- First Number — the number assigned to the first numbered page. Set to a value other than 1 when continuing numbering across multiple documents.
- Total Pages — overrides the total page count used in 1 / 10 and custom patterns. Leave empty to use the actual document page count.
Output File
The processed document is saved as {original}_numbered.pdf by default. To use a different name, click the filename shown in the settings panel — a rename dialog opens where you can type any name you prefer. Rename before clicking Add Page Numbers.
Cost
Adding page numbers costs 1 credit per 50 pages (minimum 1 credit). A 40-page document costs 1 credit; a 120-page document costs 3 credits. The exact cost and your current credit balance are shown before you confirm, so there are no surprises. If your balance is insufficient, the shortfall is shown and the app takes you to the packages page to top up.
Tips for Best Results
- Skip the cover page. Set First Page to 2 to leave the cover unnumbered while still counting it in the total. Combine with First Number set to 1 so the second page shows "1".
- Use offset fields to avoid existing content. If your document already has a footer or header, use Space X and Space Y to push the number outside the occupied area rather than overlapping it.
- Use the custom pattern for formal documents. Legal and academic documents often require "Page X of Y" or similar. Use the Custom pattern with {p} and {n} to match the required format exactly.
- Reduce opacity for watermark-style numbers. Setting opacity to 0.3–0.5 produces a subtle, watermark-style page number that does not interfere with the document content visually.
- Set First Number when combining documents. If you are numbering chapters separately and need chapter two to start at page 25, set First Number to 25 so the sequence continues correctly across files.
